Human Ecology Graduate Student Research and Travel Fund Policy

Brief description of the award:
Graduate students are eligible to apply to the department’s general donation fund to support research costs and/or travel costs during enrolment.

Award Description:

As part of the department’s commitment to provide financial support to graduate students, graduate students are eligible to apply to the department’s general donation fund to support research costs and/or travel costs during enrolment in their graduate program. Students enrolled in a master’s program are eligible to apply once during their program for up to $500. Students enrolled in the doctoral program are eligible to apply twice during their program for a total amount up to $1000.

Award Eligibility:

Eligible costs include:

1. Costs associated with traveling to a conference at which the student is first author on a paper or poster presentation. Eligible items include: travel, accomodation, conference registration fees, and poster printing.

2. Costs associated with conduction thesis research. Eligible items include: copyrighted measures or resources, printing, special equipment*(tape recordersm cameras, external hard-drives for data storage, etc), production or purchase of special materials (fabric, videos, etc), software, postage, travel for data collection purposes, participant honoraria.

3. Costs associated with printing and binding up to two copies of the thesis, one of which is for the department.*Note: Equipment purchased through the Human Ecology Graduate Student Research and Travel Fund belongs to the Department of Human Ecology and must be left in the department once the student completes their degree.

Ineligible costs include

1. Travel to a conference at which the student is not presenting a paper or poster or is a co-author (rather than first author) on a paper or poster.2. Computers, printers, or cell phones.

Applications are accepted anytime throughout the year and should be submitted to Lori Moran, 302 Human Ecology Building (lori.moran@ualberta.ca). Applications will be evaluated and approved by the Administrative Professional Officer within six weeks from the time of submission
